Homemade Rosemary Crackers

There’s something deeply grounding about making simple foods from scratch — especially the kinds of foods most people grab off a grocery store shelf without a second thought. Crackers are one of those little conveniences we rarely question… until the day you make your own and suddenly realize how much richer, fresher, and more wholesome they can be.

In our home, these homemade rosemary crackers have become a weekly routine — not just because they’re delicious, but because of the meaning behind the process.

I make these with my young children nestled on stools beside me, little fingers dusted in flour, proudly measuring ingredients with serious focus. They giggle as they knead their own tiny balls of dough, press little fingerprints into the scraps, and sprinkle the tops with “just a little more salt, please!”

And in those moments, I’m reminded that from-scratch food is so much more than nourishment.

It’s belonging.
Its purpose.
It’s family.

These crunchy, savory rosemary crackers are made with simple pantry staples, yet they carry with them the lessons we’re trying to instill in our babies — that real food comes from real hands, that they are capable and needed, and that the kitchen is a place where we create together.

If you’re looking for an easy, healthy snack to add to your weekly rotation (and a recipe your children will absolutely love helping with), you’ll adore these.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • ¼ cup flour, reserved for dusting and flouring surfaces
  • 3 tbsp fresh rosemary, chopped
  • 1 tsp salt, plus 1–2 tsp flaky salt for topping before baking
  • 1 cup warm water

How to Make Homemade Rosemary Crackers

1. Mix the dough

Add the flour, chopped fresh rosemary, and 1 teaspoon of salt into the bowl of a mixer. Pour in warm water and mix with the dough hook until a firm dough forms. It should be soft, slightly tacky, but not sticky.
If it’s too wet, sprinkle in a bit more flour.

This is the perfect moment to let little hands help “press the dough.”

2. Knead and rest

Turn the dough out onto a floured surface. Knead for 1–2 minutes, then let it rest for 10 minutes.
This makes it easier to roll out and gives you a great opportunity to hand a small ball of dough to your child — trust me, they’ll be entertained.

3. Roll it thin

Divide the dough into workable sections and roll each one out on an abundantly floured work surface or parchment paper. You want it thin, thin, thin — the thinner it is, the crispier your crackers will be.

Let your children press the rolling pin or poke “designs” with a fork; they’ll giggle with absolute joy and delight!

4. Cut into crackers

Use a pizza cutter or knife to slice the dough into squares or rectangles. There’s no perfection needed here — rustic is beautiful.

5. Prick the crackers

Use a fork to poke holes in each cracker. This helps them bake evenly and stay flat.

6. Sprinkle with salt

Dust the tops with the extra 1–2 teaspoons of salt.

This is my Eleanor’s favorite part — “rain the salt, Mama!”

7. Bake

Transfer the parchment to a baking sheet and bake at 400°F for 12–15 minutes, or until lightly golden and crisp.
Watch closely toward the end — they go from golden to overdone fast.

Why Homemade Crackers Are Worth It

When children help prepare real food — even something as simple as crackers — they learn:

✔ life skills
✔ responsibility
✔ patience
✔ teamwork
✔ confidence

And they feel deeply connected to the family rhythm.

You’re not just teaching them how to measure.
You’re teaching them how to contribute.

Food becomes the language through which they understand love and belonging.
