Deworming Chickens Naturally
Maintaining the health of your backyard chickens is essential for their overall wellbeing and productivity. Parasites or worm infestations can be a common concern for poultry keepers, but the good news is that there are natural and sustainable methods to deworming chickens naturally without resorting to chemical treatments. In this article, we'll explore various holistic approaches to keep your flock healthy and free from harmful parasites.
1. Pumpkin Seeds:
Pumpkin seeds are a natural deworming remedy rich in cucurbitacin, an amino acid that paralyzes and eliminates intestinal parasites. Grind the seeds and mix them into the chicken feed to make it more appealing for your flock. Regular consumption of pumpkin seeds can help control internal parasites and promote overall digestive health in chickens.
2. Diatomaceous Earth:
Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a natural, powdery substance made from fossilized algae. It is an effective and safe method for controlling internal parasites in chickens. DE works by dehydrating and disrupting the exoskeleton of parasites, causing them to die. Simply mix food-grade DE into your chicken feed at a rate of 2% to 5%, or sprinkle it in their dust bathing areas.
3. Herbal Supplements:
Herbs have been used for centuries for their medicinal properties, and many can help naturally deworm chickens. Some beneficial herbs include garlic, thyme, oregano, and wormwood. These herbs have anti-parasitic properties that can help control and prevent worm infestations. You can add these herbs to your chickens' feed or provide them as a fresh forage option in their coop.
4. Apple Cider Vinegar:
Raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar is known for its numerous health benefits, including its ability to create an inhospitable environment for parasites. Add a small amount (1-2 tablespoons per gallon of water) to your chickens' drinking water. The acidity of the vinegar helps maintain a healthy digestive tract and discourages the growth of parasites.
5. Fermented Foods:
Fermented foods, such as yogurt and sauerkraut, are rich in probiotics that can enhance the digestive health of chickens. Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of bacteria in the gut, making it less hospitable for parasites. Include fermented foods in the chickens' diet, either by adding them to the feed or offering them separately.
6. Rotational Grazing
Implementing a rotational grazing system can significantly reduce the risk of worm infestations in your flock. Move your chickens to different areas of your property regularly, allowing the pasture to rest and break the life cycle of parasites. This natural method mimics the behavior of wild birds and helps prevent the buildup of worm larvae in the soil.
7. Change Drinking Water DAILY
It's crucial to highlight the importance of changing your chickens' drinking water daily. Clean and fresh water is essential for maintaining overall health and preventing the spread of waterborne diseases. Stagnant water can become a breeding ground for harmful bacteria and parasites, compromising your flock's well-being. By providing clean water daily, you not only ensure optimal hydration but also contribute to the overall cleanliness and hygiene of your poultry environment.
Recipe for Deworming Chickens Naturally
Ingredients:
- Raw Pumpkin Seeds
- Organic Keifer
- Diatomaceous Earth
- Optional:
- Raw Nuts
- Dried Fruit
- Fresh Herbs
- Dried Herbs
In a blender mix:
- 2 cup raw pumpkin seeds
- 4 cups Keifer (32 oz)
- 1/2 cup Diatomaceous Earth
Once completely blended, feed to your chickens!
I recommend feeding this to your chickens every couple of months, and especially frequently during the wet season when their feet are constantly covered in mud. Chickens will drink from any water source that they find. This means they will drink from dirty water pools that have collected on the ground. This is when chickens are most prone to parasite exposure!!
I hope this has been helpful in deworming chickens naturally!
